Weekly Update

Math: We began Topic 14 this week. Students are learning all about customary units of measurement to measure length, capacity, and weight. Today we focused on converting between customary units.

Social Studies: We are now traveling to the Midwest and learning all about this regions' climate, geography, natural resources, important people and places, and Native Americans. Study help: Southeast Quizlet

Reader's Workshop: To continue our literature theme of heroes, this week we  read several non-fiction articles on modern everyday heroes. Students practiced creating claims supported with evidence from our readings to write essays about heroes. We finished up our Greek Mythology mini unit by reading a play. Students learned about the features of this unique type of text.

Writer's Workshop:
We continued our work with narrative stories, but this week our focus was writing with a unique perspective in the story. Students took a favorite fairy tales (Little Red Riding Hood, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, or the Three Little Pigs) and wrote it from a different character's point of view. Students had fun getting creative with these stories. Look out for these fun stories coming home next week.

Author Visit: Grade 1-5 were in for a special treat this week with an author visit from Andy Griffiths. Many of us have read some of the books in his 13 Story Tree House series.
