Classroom Update
Students participated in several exciting learning experiences this week!
Mystery SKYPE
Students participated in their first Mystery SKYPE this week. During a mystery SKYPE the fourth grade SKYPEs with another fourth-grade class somewhere in the world. Students work in collaborative groups to develop their speaking and listening skills by developing questions to ask the mystery class to determine their exact location. Students also develop their geography and map skills by using an Atlas to develop effective and specific questions to ask the mystery class. The mystery class does the same, trying to guess our location. Our first Mystery SKYPE class was from Ottawa, Canada!
Archeologist Visit
Mrs. Silvia, of the Haffenreffer Museum at Brown University visited our classes again to present information about the Native people of the Arctic. Mrs. Silvia brought real artifacts to help students learn about how the culture of these people is greatly impacted by their unique climate. Students tried traditional Inuit games that were used to build hunting skills, dressed in traditional Inuit clothing, and tried a traditional ceremonial dance. Thank you to the JFK PCC for funding this great learning experience!

Classroom Update
We have had a busy full week full of lots of new learning!
Math: Students have completed a unit of multiplication and are now working hard in our division unit. In this unit students will learn how to use the Partial Quotients method to divide. Students also learned about remainders and how to interpret remainders when solving word problems. Next week students will continue to learn problem solving strategies specific to division. Students will deepen their knowledge of factors and multiples by looking at prime and composite numbers. Finally students will be introduced to divisibility rules to help build their number sense.
Reader's Workshop:
After discussing non-fiction texts for the past few weeks we have now begun a new interactive read aloud. We have begun reading Little Dog, Lost by Marion Dane Bauer a novel written in a poem structure. Some of our focuses include: fact/opinion, narrative elements, inferring, visualizing, point of view, figurative language, theme, and author's craft.
Writer's Workshop:
After hard work developing a fiction story, students are now in the editing stage of the writing process in their fiction stories. We are focusing on some new grammar and mechanic skills that students can apply to their writing. Students will also continue to practice their skills in paragraphing dialogue and editing their stories for spelling.
Science:
We have finished up our second science unit on weather by discussing air masses, fronts, storms, and the jet stream. We have also been discussing study strategies that students can use to prepare for upcoming tests.
Social Studies:
We have begun our unit on our neighbors to the north, Canada!
Hour of Code:
Students participated in the "Hour of Code" this week. Students were introduced to computer science and computer programing in a fun interactive game like experience. Students can use this link https://code.org/learn to try different coding themed games.

Classroom Update
Wishing all of our families a Happy Thanksgiving!
Math:
We are now well into our unit on multiplication. Students have use the are model with base 10 blocks as well as the windows method to solve multiplication problems while also learning about why these methods work. Students will continue to practice the windows method next week.
Reader's Workshop:
The past two weeks we have focused on learning about non-fiction text. Students are able to identify non-fiction text features that help the reader to better understand the information presented in the text. We also looked at the way non-fiction text are built (non-fiction text structures). Students worked on using key words to identify the structure of a text and in doing so will help them begin strategic readers.

Classroom Update
Math:
We have completed Topic 3 Finding and Analyzing Patterns and we are now moving into our unit on Multiplication. Your child will be learning about different strategies to multiply larger numbers. Be sure to look out for demo videos explaining these methods.
Social Studies/ Science:
We are continuing to discuss storms in our weather unit in science. In social studies we began our Mexico unit of study by learning about the Day of the Dead and making sugar skull masks.
Reader' Workshop:
We have officially completed our first interactive read aloud, Mr. Popper's Penguins. Students enjoyed many penguin themed activities on Thursday's "black and white" day. Also, on Thursday students were treated to an Antarctica presentation from Mr. Whitmore. Our goals for this interactive read aloud included asking talk worthy questions, tracking narrative elements, and finding evidence from the text to support inferences about character traits.
Writer's Workshop:
Students have brought home their published narrative stories to share with you. We are now well into writing a second realistic fiction narrative story using all of the strategies we have learned. Students are learning to how generate ideas and develop believable characters in their stories.
Other Exciting News!
Congratulations to all of the students who participated in student council elections. Running for student council and giving a speech to your classmates is certainly something to be proud of!

Weekly Update
Our first full week this month had many fun learning experiences for students to participate in.
Check out the Fourth Grade News Blog for our special "package" that was recieved on Monday.
Also, check out the Fourth Grade News Blog for more about our special author guest this week.
This week, fourth graders were treated to a presentation about the Natives of the Northeast, and about archaeology. Students participated in an "archaeological dig" right at JFK. Mrs. Silvia, of the Haffenreffer Museum at Brown University, brought real artifacts, and explained to the students how archaeologists find artifacts and estimate their age. We look forward to learning more from this program throughout the year. Thank you to the JFK PCC for funding this awesome experience!

How can I divide with 0 and 1?
There are special rules when you divide with 0 and 1.
Check them out below!
Rule #1: Dividing by 1
Any number divided by 1 is itself!
8 1 = 8
4 1 = 4
|
Rule #2: 1 as a Quotient
Any number (except 0) divided by itself is 1!
5 ÷5 = 1
7 ÷ 7 = 1
|
Rule #3: Dividing 0 by a Number
0 divided by any number (except 0) is 0.
0 ÷ 3 = 0
0 ÷ 9 = 0
|
Rule #4: Dividing by 0
You cannot divide by 0.
6 ÷ 0 = you can’t do it!
2 ÷ 0 = you can’t do it!
