Classroom Update

We have had a busy full week full of lots of new learning!

Math: Students have completed a unit of multiplication and are now working hard in our division unit. In this unit students will learn how to use the Partial Quotients method to divide. Students also learned about remainders and how to interpret remainders when solving word problems. Next week students will continue to learn problem solving strategies specific to division. Students will deepen their knowledge of factors and multiples by looking at prime and composite numbers. Finally students will be introduced to divisibility rules to help build their number sense.

Reader's Workshop:
After discussing non-fiction texts for the past few weeks we have now begun a new interactive read aloud. We have begun reading Little Dog, Lost by Marion Dane Bauer a novel written in a poem structure. Some of our focuses include: fact/opinion, narrative elements, inferring, visualizing, point of view, figurative language, theme, and author's craft.

Writer's Workshop:
After hard work developing a fiction story, students are now in the editing stage of the writing process in their fiction stories. We are focusing on some new grammar and mechanic skills that students can apply to their writing. Students will also continue to practice their skills in paragraphing dialogue and editing their stories for spelling.

Science:
We have finished up our second science unit on weather by discussing air masses, fronts, storms, and the jet stream. We have also been discussing study strategies that students can use to prepare for upcoming tests.

Social Studies:
We have begun our unit on our neighbors to the north, Canada!

Hour of Code:
Students participated in the "Hour of Code" this week. Students were introduced to computer science and computer programing in a fun interactive game like experience. Students can use this link https://code.org/learn to try different coding themed games.
