Reader's Workshop: To continue our literature theme of heroes, this week we  read several non-fiction articles on modern everyday heroes. Students practiced creating claims supported with evidence from our readings to write essays about heroes. We finished up our Greek Mythology mini unit by reading a play. Students learned about the features of this unique type of text.

Writer's Workshop:
We continued our work with narrative stories, but this week our focus was writing with a unique perspective in the story. Students took a favorite fairy tales (Little Red Riding Hood, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, or the Three Little Pigs) and wrote it from a different character's point of view. Students had fun getting creative with these stories. Look out for these fun stories coming home next week.

Author Visit: Grade 1-5 were in for a special treat this week with an author visit from Andy Griffiths. Many of us have read some of the books in his 13 Story Tree House series.

Snow Treasure Day: Sled STEM Challenge

As part of our "Snow Treasure" celebration students took on the Duct tape sled challenge. Thank you for all of the donations of supplies! Students used their math knowledge to meet the size requirements and measure the distance their sled traveled down the hill. Using the engineering process students build and raced their sled down a hill.

Museum of Science Visit

Thank you to the Kennedy PCC for funding an amazing learning opportunity. The Museum of Science visited JFK on Tuesday to help students take a closer look at animal adaptations. Students loved seeing a live frog, gecko, and a "Screaming Hairy" armadillo. They also looked at a variety of animal skulls and used eye and teeth features to determine the animal's food source. What a great learning experience!

Weekly Update

Math: Students are continuing to learn about fractions. Topic 13 focuses on fraction/ decimal relationships. Topic 13 assessment will be given next Wednesday.

Reader's Workshop: This week we began working on our Greek Mythology Mini Unit. We will read many mini myth stories together and discuss their meaning. We will focus our discussions on heroes, connecting these new stories to Snow Treasure   by Marie McSwigan. We will also connect these new stories to the non-fiction articles we read last week about modern everyday heroes. Students practiced creating claims supported with evidence from our readings to "write" essays about heroes.

Special Author Webcast: This week we had the special treat of viewing a live webcast by author of the "How to Train your Dragon" series Cressida Cowell. She shared her inspiration for this popular series, as well as many other tips for young writers.

Writer's Workshop:
We have revisited narrative writing skills to write the next chapter of a story and write stories from another point of view. Students are working with a partner to plan and write the next chapter of Snow Treasure,  deciding what happened next in the story.

Archeologist Visit
Mrs. Silvia, of the Haffenreffer Museum at Brown University visited our classes again to present information about the Native people of the Plains. Mrs. Silvia brought real artifacts to help students learn about how the culture of these people is greatly impacted by the introduction of the horse. Students studied hunting artifacts, dressed in traditional Plains Native clothing, and tried a traditional ceremonial dance. Thank you to the JFK PCC for funding this great learning experience!

Today we celebrated Read Across America Day and Dr. Suess' birthday. Students at JFK dressed as their favorite character!
