Math: We are well into Topic 14. Students are learning all about metric and customary units of measurement to measure length, capacity, and weight/mass.
Social Studies: We are now traveling to the Midwest and learning all about this regions' climate, geography, natural resources, important people and places, and Native Americans.
Reader's Workshop: This past month we have been working on our Greek Mythology Mini Unit. We read many mini myth stories together and discussed their meaning. We focused our discussions on heroes, connecting these new stories to Snow Treasure by Marie McSwigan. We then read several non-fiction articles on modern everyday heroes. Students practiced creating claims supported with evidence from our readings to write essays about heroes. We have also just started our next interactive read-aloud, The One and Only Ivan by Kathrine Applegate. Before reading we read nonfiction books and articles to learn all about Gorillas. Students are also keeping an observation journal and watching videos and live cams of gorillas and other animals to build background knowledge to read this book.
Writer's Workshop:
We have revisited narrative writing skills to write the next chapter of a story and write stories from another point of view. Students planned and wrote the next chapter of Snow Treasure, deciding what happened next in the story. Also, students took a favorite fairy tale (Little Red Riding Hood or Goldilocks and the Three Bears) and wrote it from a different character's point of view. Students had fun getting creative with these stories.

Snow Treasure Day: Sled Steam Challenge:
Celebrating Pie Day: We created a line plot to show all of the "round" snacks we eat. Also, as a 4th grade team we ran 3.14 miles around the gym. Each student got a chance to run a lap or two. Students estimated the time to run 3.14 miles and raced the clock to see how fast they are.
