Weekly Update

It's hard to believe that this was the last week of September!

Please check out the Fourth Grade News blog for updates on several special activities that Fourth graders participated in this week! Reading about our SKYPE visit is a must! :)

Math: We finished our second math unit on adding and subtracting whole numbers. Students also worked on solving addition and subtraction word problems by learning how to use tape or bar diagrams to illustrate the situation.

Reader's Workshop: The focus of this week's reader's workshops was on narrative story elements. Students reviewed plot, setting, characters, conflict, and theme. Students will gain a deeper understanding of each of these elements throughout the year through interactive read-alouds. We also look a deeper look at plot, by using Story Mountains to track the events in the story "Dog Breath" by Dav Pilkey. In collaborative groups students determined which event was the "climax" of the story. On Friday we also talked about how to read a graphic novel, as these are a very popular choices in fourth grade.

Writer's Workshop:
Students worked on the week's word study by focusing on the prefixes -un and -re. Students learned how these prefixes change the meaning of words and how to use their knowledge of how these prefixes change words to practice new strategies while reading. Students also drafted their top personal narrative idea using the timeline and planning boxes they created last week.

Science:
We began our science unit by talking about layers of the earth's atmosphere and the water cycle. We continued our study of weather by discussing why we have wind. Students have also began tracking the air pressure on two different barometers each morning and afternoon. We will be looking to see if the air pressure changes with certain types of weather. Collaborative groups also completed their "time trials" to determine their fastest puffer for their Puffmobiles. We will be holding Puffmobile races soon.

Social Studies: We continued our study of reading maps by comparing political and physical maps and also by talking about the compass rose.
