First Day!

Tomorrow is the first day of school! I am so excited to meet each of you. I have a great day planned for us to get to know one another.

I've been busy getting our classroom library ready for a new year. It's all organized and cleaned up, ready for you to pick out some books for reader's workshop!

Welcome Fourth Grade Students and Families!

      My name is Mrs. Williams and I am so excited to be your teacher this year! We are going to do so many fun things this year and of course we will learn a lot. 

     Just so you know a little about me, I thought I'd include a few details. This will be my 5th year teaching here at JFK, and this will be my 2nd year in fourth grade! My hobbies include photography, swimming, going to the beach, reading, and tending to our garden. Mr. Williams and I have two daughters Riley and Emily. This summer we traveled to Cape Cod and enjoyed searching the "mud flats" for all kinds of neat creatures when the tide went out. I hope you had a fabulous summer and I can’t wait to hear all about it.

     I have been busy getting our classroom ready for your arrival, I can't wait for you to see it. Be sure to check back soon for a sneak peak! I have also been reading some amazing books for fourth grade! Some that we can read together and others that you may read in books clubs or on your own. There are so many things to learn in fourth grade. Do you know meteorologists determine the weather each day? This year in science we will study weather, animal adaptations, and so much more. Which US states have you traveled to? In fourth grade we will also study the many regions of our country. I am very excited to take this journey together! 

     When you come to school, I want you to bring your own unique personality and know you can be yourself. You should never be afraid to try new things or make a mistake. That's how we learn!

Week in Review 1/30 - 2/3

Hello 4th grade families! I am thrilled to be able to update our classroom blog for the remainder of the year! The class and I have been having a great time learning together. We had an awesome week!

Math:

We learned about mixed numbers and improper fractions this week. We have been working hard to learn how to add and subtract mixed numbers using math tools like fraction strips, drawing models and number lines. We have also been practicing how to rename mixed numbers as improper fractions and rename improper fractions as mixed numbers. We have learned a great deal of math concepts this week. We will be continuing to practice these skills next week! I will be sending home a study guide at the beginning of the week to review for our assessment on Friday 2/10.

Reading:

We have started reading a historical nonfiction book called Snow Treasure, by Marie McSwigan. We don’t want to put it down! During the read aloud lessons, we have been identifying figurative language in the chapters. One of our favorite lessons this week was finding onomatopoeia's! We have also been using our summarizing skills to write brief summaries of each chapter as a class. We are eager to keep reading to find out more about this exciting adventure!

Writing:

Everyone in the class has created a thesis for our essay writing lesson. Each student has thought of an interesting topic of their choice. Each student has been thinking of main ideas to write about that support their thesis. Everyone has been working hard during this brainstorming process!

Social Studies:

All of the fourth graders have been researching for their D.C Project this week. We also made the project flip books to work on at home. Our last day of research in the classroom will be Monday 2/6. Don’t forget the due date is Thursday 2/16. I am excited to see the final products!

Optional Work: Students have the option to create a 3D model of a D.C. monument of their choice. They can bring them in and show them to the class!
